Get Ready to Play

Set up Your Board(s)

  1. Set the board(s) on a flat surface
    after unfolding the legs.
  2. Remove the X & O pucks by twisting them counter-clockwise, then set them by the board.
  3. Establish a line 10 steps away that you'll throw from, or set up the boards ten steps apart.

Set Your Teams

  1. Tic Bag Toe is played by 2 teams with 2,
so find 3 friends and pick your partner.
  2. Flip a coin...winner gets to pick X or O.
X always throws first, but each has pros and cons!
  3. Remove the beanbags from the carrying case and give them to the players who will throw first.

Start Playing

  1. X throws first, then the two players take turns trying to throw their bags through the holes.
  2. When you make one, your partner fills it with your X or O by inserting the pick and twisting it clockwise.
    • If a bag hits the ground before it hits the board, it's "dead," doesn't count, and should be removed from the board or hole.
    • If a bag lands on the board but does not fall in a hole, leave it there because if it gets knocked in -- by either team -- it counts!
    • If 1 of each team's bags go into the hole at the same time, that's a "wash" and neither counts.
    • If 2 of one team's bags and 1 of the other team's go into one hole at the same time, the team who had two bags go in claims the space.
  3. If neither team complete 3 in a row in a given round...
    • In a 1-board game, the players by the board leave the pucks in place, grab the bags, and trade places with their partners.
    • In a 2-board game, each board is a "game within a game" so when two players finish their round, their partners start their turn.

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!

  • Three spaces in a row = Tic Bag Toe!
  • But...rebuttal! When one player makes a throw that completes a Tic Bag Toe, their opponents gets ONE CHANCE to try to make it in the same hole. If they succeed, it cancels out their opponent's winning throw and the game continues. If anything else happens, the game is over.
  • For a quick game you can say whoever gets a Tic Bag Toe first wins,
but most people like to play that the first to get three Tic Bag Toes wins.

Formats and Variations

One of the best things about Tic Bag Toe is how many different ways you can alter the rules to make games faster, or more fair, or more competitive.

Here are a few suggestions -- let us know which ones your friends and family love or tell us about your own twists so we can add them!

If you're thirsty...

  • When a player claims a space, their opponent takes a drink.
  • When a player "blocks" a Tic Bag Toe, their opponent takes two drinks.
  • When a player gets Tic Bag Toe, their opponent takes three drinks.
(But if you're playing rebuttals, those three drinks go the other way!)

If you want to "handicap" a game...

  • Head Start: Let the less experienced player claim a space before the game starts.
  • Power Play: Let the less experienced player throw 4 bags per round while their opponent only throws 3.
  • Wait Your Turn: Let the less experienced player throw all of their bags, and claim any spaces they earn, before their opponent gets to throw any of their bags.

If you want to play 1-on-1...

  1. Ask a friend to place pucks for you so you don't need to walk down and place them yourself after every make.
  2. Keep track of who has claimed each space, and just know that if the other person makes it in that hole, it doesn't count.
  3. If you're up for a little exercise, walk over and place your puck whenever you make a bag in the hole.
  4. If you want to get your sweat on, say that whoever makes it in any open hole gets to run to the board and place one of their symbols anywhere they want.
